At a glance
Xingping (兴坪) is an ancient town on the Li River, about 25 km from Yangshuo, that was a county seat over 1,700 years ago. It sits directly across from the karst bend featured on the back of China’s ¥20 banknote. Today it’s a mellow stop of old streets, riverside cafes, and the best low-key base for the most scenic Li River rafting.
Xingping is where the Li River’s fame becomes literal: the bend just across the water is the one on the ¥20 note, and you can stand on the old wharf and see it. The town itself is old — founded in the Three Kingdoms era, it served as a county seat for centuries — and its laojie (老街) still has Ming- and Qing-dynasty brick houses, though now they hold teahouses and guesthouses rather than granaries.
It’s quieter and cheaper than Yangshuo, which makes it a lovely base. From here the bamboo raft to the 20-yuan view and Nine Horse Hill is the most scenic Li River section, and the sunsets over the peaks are superb from the waterfront.
Quick tip: to shoot the banknote view, cross to the opposite bank (a short boat or the hiking path) — that’s where the classic composition lines up. In town, arrive late afternoon for golden-hour rooftops and a riverside sundowner.
