Longji Rice Terraces: Everything You Need to Know
The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are the region's most jaw-dropping contrast to the river scenery β thousands of layered fields climbing the slopes for over 1,000 years, farmed by Zhuang and Yao minority villages. They are a half-day's drive from Guilin, and worth an overnight if your schedule allows.

Which village area to choose
- Ping'an (Peace Village): the classic postcard terraces, two famous viewpoints (Nine Dragons & Five Tigers, Seven Stars with Moon). Easy to reach, more developed.
- Jinkeng / Dazhai: larger, wilder terraces with cable car access and the best sunrise/sunset viewpoints (Golden Buddha Peak). Better if you want to hike between hamlets.
- Ancient Zhuang Village (Anjiang): quieter, older architecture, fewer tour groups.

When to go (the terraces change completely)
- Aprilβmid-May: fields flooded and planted β mirror reflections, lush green.
- JuneβAugust: deep green, rice growing tall.
- Late Sepβearly Oct: golden harvest β the iconic shot (avoid National Day week).
- Winter: bare but sculptural; possible light snow on the ridges.
Getting there from Guilin
- Direct bus from Guilin (β3 hrs) to the Longji scenic area entrance.
- Private car (β2.5 hrs) is faster and lets you stop at a viewpoint en route.
- Entrance ticket + (optional) cable car at Jinkeng.
Overnight beats day-trip
A day trip is possible but rushed. Staying in a village guesthouse lets you catch sunrise over the terraces β the payoff shot. Our local team pairs the transfer with a village homestay and a guide who knows the quiet ridges.
What to expect
- Real hiking: stone paths between terraces; decent shoes, not sandals.
- Yao women with long hair often demonstrate traditional weaving β ask before photographing.
- Food is hearty mountain fare: bamboo rice, cured pork, fresh veg.
You don't "see" Longji in ten minutes from a car window. You walk the ridges, and the scale only hits you at the third switchback.β A Dazhai homestay host
